Mother Medea
both loving and destructive
The work “Medea” written by the Greek tragedian Euripides more then 2.500 years ago, reveals the inner emotions of passion, jealousy and vengeance.
Medea, a mesmerising, respected sorceress, sacrifices her own identity and follows her new husband Jason to his country. She leaves behind the echoes of her achievements to assimilate to her husbands' culture. When Jason takes a new wife, Medea feels like he has soiled their marriage. She wants "to reach so deep at Jason's heart that it burns to pieces". She sacrifices their children on the altar of revenge. Brutally, without mercy.
Revenge is more important to Medea than maternal love or forgiveness.
To us, there is no such act as shocking as a mother killing her own flesh and blood. Trough these series of works I try to give a symbolic interpretation to the atrocity of this collision of anger and flesh.
Medea’s inner conflict between being a woman, a caring mother, a loving wife and a respected sorceress draws the frame for my series “Mother Medea”. I had in mind the different roles women take in our society and I put some question marks regarding those various roles.
With my art works I seek to uncover and reveal the shadows of the mind and the tempests of the heart. Understanding and compassion are our tools to rise above trials and tribulations. With willingness and resilience we can move beyond.
The Apotheosis of this series of works sublimates a state of distress
into Hope, Love and Compassion.
The concept of the series “Mother Medea” is about bringing Awareness into mind and actions.
To transform pain and suffer into hope, love and compassion. Ultimately, "to Surrender".
